I Found JOY!

During my end of the year blogging hiatus, my paternal grandmother passed away after several years of failing health. Since then the family has gathered several times for the somewhat awkward meeting of what to do with her belongings. Perhaps this is not strange for everyone, but for some reason this exercise always makes my stomach churn.

So, upon being asked what I would like of Grandmother’s things, I said, “I would really like a cookbook that she wrote in.”

My dad looked at me like I was a bit crazy and then replied, “Oh, there are a lot of those, what else would you like?” We went on with the day and I brought home some precious treasures that I will cherish for the rest of my life and I am sure they will end up at the home of one of my children or grandchildren some day.

Last Friday, I returned to Enid. We stopped by Grandma’s house. While most of her belongings were gone or stashed in boxes, he cookbooks were right where she left them. Dad gestured to the shelf and said, “Go ahead and pick out the one you want.” I pulled out of few and gently flipped through the pages. There was not a lot of writing in most of them. Finally, I spotted one that had duct tape up its spine. I smiled and picked it up. It was Irma Rombauer’s Joy of Cooking. My mind instantly went to the movie Julie and Julia and the less than flattering role Rombauer played in the film. **If you haven’t seen it, watch it.** When you do you will find out that supposedly she paid for her first edition to come out and she “did not even test all of the recipes.” My thoughts on the issue are as follows….the Joy of Cooking I remember is the cookbook that was always laying around my grandmother’s kitchen and it did bring her much joy.

This being said, I picked it up, flipped through the pages, found countless recipes scrawled in the front and back and I knew this was the one.  I took one more quick glance at the shelf and a few books down I found the cover with even more recipes in my grandmother’s familiar handwriting.

I held the book in my arms as my dad gave me a very strange look as if I just dug through a dumpster and pulled out the most disgusting piece I could find, but he didn’t say a word….he has learned that sometimes I know what I am doing.

Fast forward to this morning….I was flipping through a few blogs and I found a reference to the 1964 edition of the Joy of Cooking.  It made note of the Opossum recipe that is in the O section of the index.  I jumped up, found my copy and sure enough….it is the 1964 edition and right there on page 454 is the recipe for how to prepare opossum, bear, raccoon, muskrat, woodchuck and wild boar.  I am assuming these are some of the recipes Ms. Rombauer did not try, but I am just tickled to start my week with such a discovery.  This cookbook will be added to my collection of treasured cookbooks for sure.  And, no worries, I am sure The Joy will pop up in many more blog posts in the future.  Who knows, maybe I will prepare opossum for my next dinner party.

What a long stange trip it’s been

We survived Spring Break 2011……barely, but we are still here.  We had no major plans from Spring Break….the zoo, the yard, some movies.  Then, disaster struck.  My usually very healthy family broke down, piece by piece.  It started with Big Guy, then Little Guy, then Law Man……and finally, after I had convinced myself and everyone else that I was a superhero and my superpower was never getting sick….I got the flu.

Where was the flu shot?  Our helpful pediatrician said that she would not bother with it because the it only helped against Type A and “EVERYONE” is getting Type B.  Now, I have mentioned before that I am not one to constantly be chasing “everyone” but in this case I listened to the doctor.  Low and behold I somehow got the flu……TYPE A.

I felt terrible and my family just doesn’t really know what to do when I am down.  I finally just made it my full time job to get better.  I took the medicine, drank a lot of water and went to bed.  I watched several movies, read a couple of books, and spent a lot of time looking out the window thinking about life in general…..but mostly I just thought about how much I wanted to feel better.

Somehow, my mind kept being drawn to a book that I remember from when I was a kid.  I remember the story so well, but whenever I ask Law Man or a friend if they have read this book they look at me like I am crazy.

It is a story about a brother and sister who discuss where balloons go….you know….when they fly off in the sky.  The brother tells his sister that they go to Balloonia, a land far away, above the clouds, populated entirely by balloons. The sister throws a little fit and tells her balloon to take her to Balloonia.  The sister goes and finds that she and everything in this pretend world is made out of balloons.

For some reason I love to imagine this world of balloons.  I suppose that it is the same fascination that constantly has my boys begging for a balloon every where we go.

This led me to think about the movie UP.  Imagine my delight when I saw this video of a real house being lifted by 300 helium balloons.  It made me smile and frankly, it made my whole Spring Break!

I really love doing something just to do it!!!! Happy Monday!

Happy Birthday Lucye…the original

IMG_0005_2 2Today my Nanny…..my maternal grandmother, Lucye, would be 88 years old.  I love her so much and it is so much fun to have our little Lucye bird to remember her every time we say her name.  Nanny was so much fun.  She used to go on a lot of vacations with us, we stayed with her every Spring Break and for at least a week each summer.  I remember her taking us to the Elks pool and she would swim with us the whole afternoon.  I love her chicken and dumplin’s and her fried….okra, catfish, chicken, you name it she could fry it and it was good!

img126 Nanny loved her children and her grandchildren “bigger than the sky” as we would say around here.  She bravely went with all of us into the pits of despair at one time or another and never wavered.  Nanny was not perfect, none of us are, but I am so thankful that I can look back on my time with her so fondly and use what she taught me to be a better wife and mother.

Happy Birthday Nanny!  We love you.

To Infinity and Beyond

Hero — Buzz Lightyear

Super power — Imagination that transforms into reality

Little Guy was asked to dress like his hero for school.  He decided that he wanted to be Buzz Lightyear.  At first I wished he had picked something a little more original, but then I realized that this was perfect for him.  Little guy has the best imagination of any child I know.  He will go on and on with a made up conversation, language, character or just about whatever he thinks up.  It does not matter who tells him to stop or who tries to convince him he is being silly…..he will continue until everyone is engaging his made up world.  His imagination really does go “to infinity and beyond.”
